VPS & Linux

What is a dedicated IP, and do I need one?

A dedicated IP is an IP address used only by your server, rather than a shared node IP with a specific port. It gives you a clean address that's yours alone — and every VPS already includes one by default.

How dedicated IPs work

The difference shows up mostly in how players and services reach your server.

  1. Every VPS includes 1 dedicated IP by default, so your VPS already has its own address.
  2. On game hosting, servers are reached at a shared node IP plus a specific port by default; a dedicated IP gives you an address that's yours alone — often usable on the game's default port with no port number to share.
  3. Additional IPs are a paid add-on at $4/month per IP.

Tip: A dedicated IP is handy when you want a clean address — to run on the standard port, attach a domain simply, or keep your address off a shared node. Your VPS comes with one already; extra IPs are $4/month each.

Do you need one?

It depends on how you want people to connect.

  • A dedicated IP shines when you want a tidy, default-port address or a simple domain setup.
  • If you're on a VPS, you already have one, so there's nothing extra to buy unless you need more.
