Why is my server slow to load or stuck loading (server list, world gen)?
A server that's slow to load or seems stuck at "loading" is usually chewing through heavy world generation, large mods and plugins, or booting under tight RAM. The Console shows you exactly what it's working on.
Why boots are slow
Heavy world gen, big modpacks, and insufficient RAM at startup are the common culprits. The first boot after a version change or new modpack is always the slowest, since so much is generated and loaded up front.
Speeding up loads
- Watch the Console during startup — it shows what it's chewing on (world gen, plugin/mod init).
- Give a heavy modpack time on first boot; it generates and loads a lot up front.
- Ensure your RAM and RAM Buffer are set sensibly in the Startup tab so it isn't thrashing.
- Reduce view/simulation distance and trim heavy plugins/mods if boots stay slow.
Tip: The first start after a version change or a new modpack is always the slowest — later boots are much quicker.
Frequently asked questions
It's stuck on the server list or pinging — what's happening? Usually a boot still in progress. Watch the Console to confirm it's still loading.
My heavy modpack takes ages — is that normal? Yes — expect a slow first load, and size your RAM generously for it.
