Minecraft
I get a timeout or get kicked a few seconds after joining — what causes it?
A join that connects and then drops after a moment usually points at load or a misbehaving mod — not the address. The Console almost always tells you which.
Common causes
- The server is overloaded on boot (heavy modpack or plugins) and can't answer in time — wait for it to fully finish starting.
- Not enough RAM, so the world can't load your area — check the Console for
OutOfMemory. - A misbehaving mod or plugin kicking you (e.g. anti-cheat, "flying is not enabled").
- Very high ping to a far region.
How to diagnose
- Read the Console right when you get kicked — the reason is usually printed there.
- If it's a RAM or lag issue, see the performance and RAM articles.
- If it names a specific mod or plugin, disable that one and test again.
Tip: Give a heavy modpack a full minute or two to finish loading before you try to join — early joins during boot often time out.
Frequently asked questions
The Console shows OutOfMemory — what now? Your server needs more RAM for the world and mods it's running. See the RAM sizing articles.
It only kicks me, not others. That can be your ping or client version; try a matching version and check your latency.
