My unarchived world lands in the wrong place, or won't load — how do I fix it?
When an unarchived world lands in the wrong place or refuses to load, it's nearly always a folder-nesting or naming mismatch. Straightening out the folder structure gets it loading again quickly.
Why this happens
Server software looks for a world folder by an exact name in an exact location. If the archive unpacked with an extra wrapping folder, or the world folder's name doesn't match your config, the server can't find it — and often generates a fresh world instead.
How to fix it
- Open the extracted files and find the actual world folder (the one holding the region/level data).
- Move it so its folder name matches the world name in your server config (e.g.
level-namefor Minecraft). - Remove any extra wrapping folder that got extracted around it.
- Restart.
Tip: If the server generated a brand-new world instead of loading yours, the folder name almost certainly doesn't match your config.
Frequently asked questions
I now have two world folders — which do I keep? Keep the correct one that matches your config. Back up and then remove the stray folder so it can't cause confusion.
