Game Servers

How do I change my game server's settings (difficulty, world options)?

Most game servers let you tune difficulty, world options, and other gameplay settings without any help from us. The settings live in two places in the panel, and once you know where to look, changing them takes just a moment.

Where game settings live

For most games, options are split between two tabs:

  • Startup — launch parameters and arguments the server uses when it boots.
  • Files — the game's own configuration files, which you can edit directly in the file manager.

Which one you use depends on the game and the specific setting.

Step-by-step

  1. Stop the server from the Console tab.
  2. Edit the setting — either adjust the Startup arguments or open the relevant config file in the Files tab.
  3. Start the server again to apply your change.

Tip: For Valheim, world and difficulty settings are configured through the Startup arguments rather than a config file.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need to stop the server first? Many games only read their settings at startup, so changes made while the server is running won't take effect (and can be overwritten when the server saves).

I can't find the setting I need — what now? Setting names vary by game. If you're not sure which argument or file controls what you want, open a ticket and we'll help you locate it.
