How many players can my current server (N GB) handle?

"How many players can my server hold?" is one of the most common questions we get — and the honest answer is that it depends far more on your software and content than on RAM alone. Still, there are reasonable rules of thumb.

A plugin-server rule of thumb

On Paper, a reasonable ceiling is roughly 1GB per 8–12 light players. So:

  • 2GB ≈ a small SMP.
  • 4GB ≈ a busy survival server.
  • 8GB ≈ a large community or small network.

Modpacks cut those numbers dramatically, because the mods themselves eat most of the RAM before any players even join.

Reading your own headroom

  1. Start the server and let it settle at idle.
  2. Watch actual RAM use in the Console.
  3. If you're already near your RAM limit at idle, you're too small for meaningful player load.
  4. Scale up (or trim content) before inviting a full crowd.

Tip: If you're near your RAM limit at idle, you're already too small — see the RAM sizing answers for the next step up.

Frequently asked questions

Does RAM alone decide my player cap? No — software (Paper vs. Vanilla) and content (plugins vs. mods) matter far more than RAM by itself.

Why do modpacks lower these numbers so much? The mods consume most of the available RAM, leaving less headroom for players.
