How many mods or plugins can N GB of RAM handle?
There's no magic number of mods or plugins that a given amount of RAM can hold — it comes down to how heavy each one is, not how many files you have. Here's how to think about it, plus a quick way to check your own server.
Why counting files misleads you
A mod that adds a single item is nearly free; a world-gen or tech mod is heavy. The weight varies enormously, so counting jars tells you little. As general guidance:
- Plugins are light — dozens on 4GB is fine.
- Mods are heavy — ~50 mods want ~4GB, ~100 want ~6–8GB, 150+ want 8–12GB+.
Checking your real usage
- Boot the server and let it fully load.
- Watch actual RAM use in the Console after boot, rather than counting files.
- If you boot near the limit, upgrade your RAM or trim content.
Tip: The Console tells you the truth that a mod count can't — always size by observed RAM use after boot.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a fixed mod or plugin limit? No — a lightweight mod is nothing, a heavy one costs a lot. Judge by weight and RAM use, not count.
Can I run dozens of plugins on 4GB? Yes, plugins are light enough that dozens on 4GB is generally fine.
