Minecraft
Is my lag caused by the server being far from my players' region?
It can be — distance adds ping, which feels like lag (delayed hits, rubber-banding) even when the server's TPS is perfect. Telling ping apart from true server lag is the key to fixing the right thing.
Ping lag vs server lag
- High ping (distance-related) affects only far-away players and shows up as latency — delayed hits, rubber-banding.
- Low TPS (server-side, from CPU/RAM/mods) affects everyone at once.
That difference is the quick test: if only distant players struggle, it's ping; if everyone lags together, it's TPS.
What helps
- Check whether the issue hits far players only or the whole server.
- If most of your players are far from your region, moving to the nearer region (Washington or Germany) helps.
- If it's everyone at once, dig into TPS — see the performance articles.
Tip: Watch the F3 latency and TPS while a few players are on — it quickly shows whether you're fighting ping or a low tick rate.
Frequently asked questions
Can you lower my ping? Only by hosting closer — ping is mostly distance and routing. Pick the region nearest your players.
Everyone lags at the same time — is that distance? No, that's a TPS/performance issue, not ping. See the performance and RAM articles.
