How do I create a backup right now, and how do I back up before a version change?

Click Back up now on your server's Backups page — and yes, you should always do this before big changes like a version switch or a major mod update. It's quick and it's the safest habit you can build.

How backups work right now

Every server is backed up automatically twice a day (00:00 and 12:00 UTC by default — you can pick your own two times under Backup times). On top of that, Back up now makes a manual backup whenever you want one, and manual backups are always free to restore and download. Downloading your world via Files or SFTP still makes a handy extra off-machine copy.

How to make a backup

1. Open your server → Backups in the client area.
2. Click Back up now.
3. To keep a copy on your PC too, download the backup (a .tar.gz, up to 2 GB), or copy your files down via Files or SFTP.
4. If a change goes wrong, restore that backup from the same page — it's your restore point.

Note: Only the newest 3 manual backups are kept — a new one replaces the oldest. Making one is well worth doing before any version change or major mod/plugin update.
