Are mods client-side or server-side — do players need them too?
A common source of "connection failed" confusion is whether players need the same mods as the server. The answer depends on the type of mod — here's how to tell.
Client-side, server-side, or both
- Most gameplay mods are both: the server runs them and each player must install the same mods (and versions) in their launcher, or they'll be kicked with a mismatch.
- Server-side only: many performance/utility mods — these don't need to be on the client.
- Client-side only: shaders, minimaps — these don't need to match the server.
Keeping players in sync
- Note which of your mods are gameplay mods (usually both).
- Give players the exact modpack or mod list you run, matching versions.
- Leave server-only performance mods off the players' list.
- Client-only mods (shaders, minimaps) are each player's own choice.
Tip: When in doubt, hand players the exact modpack you run — matching mods and versions avoids the "mismatch" kick.
Frequently asked questions
Do players need every mod I have? For gameplay mods, yes — matching versions. Server-side-only and client-side-only mods don't need to match.
Why do players get kicked with a mismatch? They're missing a required gameplay mod, or running a different version than the server.
